Lorenzo de Luca (ITA) hailed his “fantastic” win at the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Valkenswaard presented by Sapinda as the race for the title crown narrowed sharply, setting up a thrilling sprint to the championship finish line.

There was major upset at the Global Champions League of Valkenswaard after the heavyweight Hamburg Diamonds knocked home city team Valkenswaard United off the Championship lead with a phenomenal win in the reigning champions’ backyard.

Auf der Reitsportanlage von Jan Tops, dem „Kopf“ der höchst dotierten Springsportserie Global Champions Tour, gingen die Aktiven zur vorletzten Etappe im niederländischen Valkenswaard an den Start. Christian Ahlmann (Marl) musste sich nur dem Italiener Lorenzo de Luca geschlagen geben.

The battle for the Global Champions League title balances on a knife-edge this evening after the Hamburg Diamonds caused major upset for current leaders Valkenswaard United on their home turf.
With just three points separating the top two teams, the formidable duo of Harrie Smolders and Jos Verlooy pulled the only double clear of the evening out of the bag for the Diamonds, putting them in pole position and the best possible place for a strong result in tomorrow’s final. Home favourites Valkenswaard United fielded the impressive combination of Alberto Zorzi and Marcus Ehning, but a costly four faults dropped the blue and orange team to fourth, but still with a chance at keeping their overall lead.

A star-studded line-up – including 7 out of the top 10 riders in the world – will take centre stage at the Tops International Arena in Valkenswaard, The Netherlands, as the turbo-charged race for the Championship accelerates.
With just three events left to go in the 2017 Championship fight, the battle for the title has become nail-bitingly tense. Current leader, and Dutch national hero Harrie Smolders (NED) looks to be on phenomenal form as he fights to keep his title dream alive, consistently bagging valuable points at every leg to now sit on a score of 263 overall.

In the final top-level competition before Olympic riders head to Rio, the Global Champions League ranking battle is on a knife edge with a wafer thin 1.5 points now separating the top two teams. The suspense and drama continued right up to the final rider in the final round with home team Valkenswaard United only narrowly clinging on to their overall lead.
Vowing to keep their Championship title dream alive, third place team rider Monaco Aces Maikel van der Vleuten revealed his team plan to „really go for it to bring the best horses we have for the team jumping.”

It was the perfect prelude to the 2016 Rio Olympics as a phenomenal battle took place for the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Valkenswaard, with Brazil-bound Rolf-Göran Bengtsson (SWE) and the formidable Casall ASK taking the win in spectacular style in front of thousands of spectators. The overall LGCT Rankings has taken a dramatic turn, with Rolf now sitting in second place and vowing to ’never give up‘ as the final rounds play out.
With all three top ranked LGCT riders in action for the Grand Prix and in a pivotal position to take the lead in the overall Champion of Champions battle, the scene was set for what was to become one of the most sensational Grand Prix events of the season so far.

23 Olympic riders are in action at the Longines Global Champions Tour of Valkenswaard and the stars of show jumping have been speaking about their hopes for Rio and today’s high stakes Grand Prix.
With last night’s Rio opening ceremony kicking off the Games, top riders will be jetting out of Europe to Brazil straight after the Grand Prix which promises to be a supreme test in their final top-level competition before the Olympics.

World Number 7 and Rio Olympic athlete Daniel Deusser (GER) blew away the competition in this afternoon’s feature class for the Longines Global Champions Tour of Valkenswaard, with a stunning jump-off win with his new 9 year old chestnut mare Happiness van T Paradijs. In a 20 rider jump-off that shifted dramatically through the gears, the highly respected German rider claimed top honours ahead of an impressive field of 50 international riders, taking home the lion’s share of the €61,800 prize purse.
