It was a night of team drama in the 11th Global Champions League of 2016 as triumphant Vienna Eagles stole victory in high winds under floodlights on the Portuguese Riviera.

The pressure was on until the very last moment of the last round of the innovative team format as leading US rider Lauren Hough, competing with Danielle Goldstein, delivered the decisive clear round on Waterford to keep their team score on a perfect zero and propelled them into first place.

Shanghai Swans dynamic pairing of in-form Edwina Tops-Alexander and Under-25 rider Alexandra Thornton glided into second place on a team total of 5 faults pushing them up the overall championship ranking to 7th place.

It was a scorching afternoon of top sport and entertainment in the sultry setting of Cascais, with the overall LGCT Rankings taking a dramatic turn and becoming even more exciting as Edwina Tops-Alexander (AUS) rocketed to the top of the leaderboard. Piergiorgio Bucci (ITA) and Casallo Z stole the show, taking a stunning win at the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Cascais, with Edwina Tops-Alexander finishing second with Lintea Tequila and Ireland’s Bertram Allen (IRL) in third with his 9 year old stallion Hector van d’Abdijhoeve.

Marco Kutscher auf Platz sechs bei der Global Champions Tour in Portugal

Den Sieg trug zwar der Italiener Piergiorgio Bucci mit Casallo Z davon, aber mit drei Platzierungen unter den Top 10 des Großen Preises der Global Champions Tour im portugiesischen Atlantikstädtchen Cascais „schlugen“ sich die deutschen Springreiter achtbar. Bester Deutscher war Marco Kutscher (Bad Essen) mit dem Holsteiner Hengst Carsten auf Platz 6.

Die elfte der insgesamt 15 Etappen umfassenden Global Champions Tour führte die Reiter nach Portugal.

Christian Ahlmann (GER) ensured all eyes were on the LGCT Ranking leader as he took a stunning win in this evening’s feature class in Cascais, Portugal, with his grey stallion Caribis Z. The pair proved to be a formidable combination, as the focus now turns to the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Cascais, where Christian currently sits in pole position with a 9 point lead over Rolf-Göran Bengtsson (SWE).

The CSI5* 1.50/1.55m Camara Municipal De Cascais class was met by 36 international competitors from around the globe, with many of the best horses and riders in the world taking to the stunning Portuguese setting to battle it out in the final round of action ahead of the Grand Prix.

Taking place this Saturday 9th July at 21:30 local time it’s set to be another exhilarating battle under the floodlights to see who will reign supreme in this popular destination.

At the top of the leaderboard are Valkenswaard United, with the team sitting pretty on 239 points overall. The experienced – and recently announced for the Rio Olympics – rider John Whitaker will be back in action for this Saturday, this week teaming up with young talent Emily Moffitt.

Leg 11 of the high-octane 2016 season calendar sees the Longines Global Champions Tour head to the stunning setting of Cascais, Portugal. LGCT Ranking leader Christian Ahlmann (GER) will be back in action again, with the top German rider hungry to return to the podium and add more valuable points to his overall tally of 209 as the Tour gallops towards its final third.

Following last weekend’s results in Paris, the Championship battle has tightened dramatically, with drop scores coming into play, and just twelve points separating the top three riders.

Emanuele Gaudiano (ITA) and Admara 2 claimed a fantastic victory tonight in the CSI5* 1.50/55m feature class in Cascais, Estoril, making them ones to watch in Saturday’s pivotal Grand Prix – round nine in the 2015 Championship. Second went to the superb Marco Kutscher (GER) who was just tenths of a second off the win and 3rd to Lauren Hough (USA) with her eye-catching gelding Cornet 39. As the sun faded with a stunning purple haze over the gorgeous arena in Portugal, the local crowd showed cheered in admiration after an exhilarating jump-off which saw riders from 18 different countries competing in the first round.

Die neunte Etappe der Global Champions Tour führte die Springreiter an die Atlantikküste. Im portugiesischen Cascais, einem Vorort des bekannten Seebades Estoril, zeigte der Schotte Scott Brash, warum er die Nummer 1 der Welt ist: Nach zwei fehlerfreien Umläufen meisterte er auch das Stechen ohne Abwurf und in Bestzeit. Bester Deutscher war Christian Ahlmann als Vierter, Ludger Beerbaum verpasste durch einen Zeitfehler den Einzug ins vierköpfige Stechen – Platz fünf.

The best riders in the world from 18 different countries will head to the lively coastal town of Cascais, Estoril, in the beautiful Portugal, to compete in the 9th leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour. As the Championship Tour kicks up another gear towards the second half of the season, top athletes from America, Ukraine, Japan, Morocco, Colombia and Ireland, to name a few, will take centre stage from the 9th – 11th July, as the battle for the title intensifies. With 502,000€ in total on offer in the CSI5* competitions over the course of the two days, there’s set to be unmissable action and a showcase of show jumping talent at its finest as the very best in the world take to the stunning 110m x 70m grass arena.
