It was a glittering display of teamwork as Antwerp Diamonds shot to the ranking lead after stealing a sparkling win at their home venue for the third round of the Global Champions League. U25 team rider, and home hero Jos Verlooy (BEL) said “we came with the big guns – our aim was to win and we did, so I couldn’t be happier!”
The Antwerp Diamonds have taken the top spot on the team ranking leaderboard, coming away from round three on 75 points, just two points ahead of Monaco Aces and Valkenswaard United, who are tied on 73 points apiece. The battle for the lead has moved up a gear, and with the teams looking ahead to Shanghai for the fourth round of action, rivalries and strategy are beginning to show.

Simon Delestre grabbed the 5* spotlight this evening as the top three riders came within two hundredths of a second of each other in an extraordinary demonstration of high calibre sport at the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Antwerp.
It was a battle of nanoseconds as the World No1 and former LGCT Antwerp Grand Prix winner took the honours in the 1.50 / 1.55m CSI5* BMW-sponsored class. The pace and performance was sensational, with many of the world’s top horses and riders in action under floodlights on the River Scheldt in Europe’s ‚Diamond City’.
With spectators holding their breath, Bertram Allen (IRL) on the experienced Romanov and Penelope Leprevost (FRA) with Vagabond de la Pomme, were joint second, crossing the line at the exact same time in 38.39s – something highly unusual in the sport. It was seen only once before last year in Paris, when Ben Maher and Karim El Zoghby took a joint win in the final class of the day.
The first round course featured light poles and cups, with delicacy the word of the day. Three skinny poles played their part with many caught out in the intimate floodlit arena.
Ten riders went through to the jump-off, with some of the world’s top horse and rider combinations in the mix for this electric round of competition.

The third round of action kicks off at 15:30 this Sunday 24th April, as the Global Champions League gallops to the first European leg of the Championship. Heading to the intimate Antwerp sand arena, nestled next to the River Scheldt, the competition will require riders and horses who’s forte is agility and speed. The small arena will lend itself to sharp turns and a fast pace, as opposed to the long galloping tracks of Mexico City, with team owners and managers putting forward their top players suited to this different destination.
Once more the formidable due of John Whitaker (GBR) and Bertram Allen (IRL) will be in action for the third round of the Championship, with the pair already proving their mix of experience and talent an intimidating combination for Valkenswaard United.

Global Champions Tour, Staut shows serious horsepower
There was more than just a place in the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Antwerp at stake in tonight’s final qualifier, as the winner of the BMW sponsored 1.55m class would also drive away with a stunning BMW 4-series cabriolet. At the end of a fiercely fought jump-off, it was Kevin Staut who was handed the key to have his moment of glory at the wheel, and he entertained the capacity crowd with some Formula 1 style circuits of the arena.
